*Academic contributions to natural resource management.*
*
Resumen:*
This talk will provide examples of how one academic department
contributes to natural resource management through both our teaching and
our research programs. The School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences is an
academic department within the College of the Environment that has
roughly 25 faculty, 100 graduate students and 100 undergraduate
majors. A high portion of our research is in the applied problems of
aquatic biology and conservation, from habitat protection to fisheries
management to aquaculture. I will describe two research programs, each
involves several faculty, students and staff working closely with
scientists in government and with industry and NGOs to bring scientific
knowledge to the management of important resources. The first project
centers around understanding the status of fish stocks and the
relationship between their management and the biological, social and
economic outcomes. The second project centers around aquatic ecosystems
of Alaska that provide a major commercial fishery, as well as
recreational fisheries and wildlife.
